PIVOT Kids
Over the last several years childhood obesity has been an ongoing problem within Australia, but thanks to programs such as ‘Pivot Kids ’, this problem can be stopped before it begins as children are taught using various methods involving movement. To lessen the weight of the obesity problem, Pivot Studio has designed this program of dance classes with a positive fitness focus. Dancing also crosses many cultural barriers as moving to music is an international language all of its own.
There are so many benefits to children learning through Dance. The physical Health benefits are numerous, the following facts were reprinted from an article by The Mayo Foundation for Medical Research:*
- Calories - During a half hour of sustained dancing you can burn between 200 and 400 calories
- Cardiovascular conditioning - Regular exercise can lead to a slower heart rate, lower blood pressure and an improved cholesterol profile (see Medical Essay, June 1991).
- Strong bones - The side-to-side movements of many dances strengthen your weight bearing bones (tibia, fibula and femur) and can help prevent or slow, loss of bone mass (osteoporosis).
- Social - Dancing is an activity that Children can do in groups inspiring teamwork and co-operation.
- Increase energy
- Improve strength
- Increase muscle tone and coordination
There are also emotional benefits to learning to Dance, “From a mind-body perspective, anything you do successfully on the physical end will positively affect your mental and emotional states.” commented Jenny Susser, Ph.D., a sports psychologist at the Women's Sports Medicine Center at New York City's Hospital for Special Surgery, a leading center for sports medicine.
In order to learn a dance, you must use your attention, several types of memory, motor coordination, sensory input, and executive function, like planning. These activities involve the frontal, temporal, parietal, and occipital lobes as well as the cerebral cortex, limbic system, and cerebellum.
Benefits of Music – Studies are also finding that listening to music is very beneficial to many learning faculties. ‘There's no question that music has a beneficial effect on your mind. A 2004 study in the journal Heart & Lung, (USA) even found proof. People who listened to music while they exercised, researchers said, performed more than twice as well on a verbal fluency test than people who listened to no music.
Said the study's lead author, Charles Emery, "...Listening to music may influence cognitive function through different pathways in the brain. The combination of music and exercise may stimulate and increase cognitive arousal while helping to organize cognitive output."
At Pivot Studio we believe that the way children are motivated and taught is just as important as what they are being taught. Our teachers are actively engaged in every activity, using positive motivation and encouragement to inspire the students to approach each challenge presented.
Management practices are changing across the board in all fields of both business and teaching. Long gone are the days that some of us remember where, in sport or dance tuition, we would be screamed at and have things thrown at us until we mastered something. In Pivot we have developed positive motivational practices based on the concept that ‘what we focus on grows’. If we focus on the talents and positive skills of each of the students, we keep them focused on the positive achievements possible in their dance. Most importantly we let the kids have fun.
Pivot FOR KIDS is a series of 1 hour classes designed to incorporate fun learning games, fitness, a variety of exercises to increase dance ability and a group routine that the students will work towards presenting at the conclusion of the term or year. The Director of Pivot Studio, Atalie Wilmoth, was inspired to create this course of classes after working with the excellent ‘Active After Schools Program’ and wanting to create a similar program that had a specific Dance focus.
Our Dance instructors are highly skilled, experienced and instruct in all areas of dance. They are all trained in the Pivot program and methods.
INSURANCE
Pivot is fully insured and all the teachers are highly trained and caring
people. Our primary concern is for the physical and emotional wellbeing of
the children and adults who attend classes. We aim to create a
welcoming, fun and caring environment.
PARTIES
Pivot Kids will have an end of year party focused on giving the kids a fun
reward for all the hard work, with fun performances for the adults. This
is not a traditional stressful 'concert', any costumes will be hired for a
small fee and it will be a fun party during the day with only short
performances for the adults. Click here for Pivot Kids Gallery
